Teatro Tascbile di Bergamo Takes Dramaturgy Tips from Natyashastra

Center for Soft Power met members of the Teatro Tascbile di Bergamo, including dancer Tiziana Barbiero and her colleagues.

TTB Teatro Tascabile di Bergamo was founded in 1973 by Renzo Vescovi. Its main percularity is to be a 'group theatre' as it is characterised by a work that takes place on the collective interaction of its members, according to the traditions of the Renaissance craftmen's workshops.

Tiziana told CSP that after a big conference in the 1970s when a troupe of Indian classical dancers visited Italy, the TTB has started its association with Indian dance. She and her fellow artistes are learning Indian dance, including Bharatanatyam, Odissi and Kathakali to "incorporate the dramaturgy techniques as outlined in the Natyashastra".

She says that while earlier the emphasis was on text, exclusively on vocal delivery, Indian art forms have influenced this extremely popular Italian theatre form to become more technique oriented.
